Congratulations to the 2016 Opal® Apple Youth Make a Difference Initiative Grantees! Grants will be awarded to these 14 youth-based organizations serving their communities in the U.S. where youth, ages 6 – 25, take leadership roles in initiatives surrounding food, nutrition and agriculture.

Garden Clubs and Food Forests

Through Garden Clubs and Food Forests, five Ojai elementary schools are able to provide a permaculture based, edible learnscape for students in grades K-6.

A big part of the mission here is through food recovery. The Galloping Grace Youth Ranch acquires food waste from schools and grocery stores to feed their livestock - over half a ton on a daily basis.

Healthy Lifestyles

Over 50 percent of children in the Port Angeles and Sequim School Districts in Washington state are eligible for free or reduced lunches. To address this food insecurity, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula members are served with a nutritious supper daily with a meal patterned after a USDA offering including milk.

When 9-year-old Amelie meekly approached her teacher in the first season of our Each One Teach One (EOTO) garden at Marie L. Greenwood Academy in Denver Public Schools to ask if she could harvest something to take home on nights her mom didn’t have money to buy anything for dinner, her teacher realized there existed an opportunity to provide both food security and nutrition to the neediest families in the community.
