Greenhouse Pest Management Initiative

The Nauset Regional Middle School of began a program for 600 students, grades 6-8 with the mission to present a science, horticultural and agricultural learning laboratory in a newly constructed 30’ X 50’ year-round greenhouse. The programs presented in the Greenhouse lab provide educational opportunities for students to learn the best practices in growing plants with the focus on nutritional health”, environmental sustainability and energy conservation. The Greenhouse opened in January, 2015. Since its opening, crops have been grown and sold at their local Farmers’ Market, to the school cafeteria, and to several restaurants in the area. The funds earned are used to insure the sustainability of the greenhouse as well as continuing the mission of providing learning opportunities for all students in all disciplines in the area of nutrition and environmental sustainability. Their hope is to gain support for the purchase of equipment related to pest management within the greenhouse. Students who already plant and maintain the plant stock will be instructed on how to identify and control pests using Integrated Pest Management methods of control.
