Youth Roots Program
To date, fifth grade participants in the Youth Roots Program of Oakland, California have conducted successful projects related to nutrition, education, and agriculture. Participants have planted edible gardens on their school campuses, educated their peers about nutrition, and launched physical activity initiatives along with nutrition facts. The opportunities are endless as these youth look at the needs that exist in their communities and find ways to make a difference from within. Students identify issues they are passionate about in their community, design and implement a youth-led service project in support of the identified issue and engage in a critical reflection of their experience. The program empowers youth to be the solution to problems they see.
